BL!NDMAN QUARTET

PROGRAMME
BL!NDMAN presents a unique interpretation of polyphonic music from the 12-15th century. Starting from the experience of pure sound, the quartet rediscovers some brilliant pieces in this inexhaustible source of masterpieces. The major canons of Johannes Ockeghem and Josquin Desprez undergo an exciting metamorphosis thanks to the specific sound spectrum of the saxophone and electronic spatialisation. The musicians start playing the pieces as a quartet and will then make use of real-time recording to gradually multiply their parts, until the full range of voices can be heard These compositions are brought face to face with contemporary pieces by Jonathan Harvey, Thierry De Mey and Eric Sleichim.
The use of canons and hoquetus in contemporary music proves the ageless relevance of these composition methods, while the playing of early music on modern instruments reveals the timeless beauty of this century-old music. The musicians gather around Athanor, a sculpture by artist Koenraad Tinel, especially designed for this concert and based on the idea of an alchemist oven as the core of light and sound.

Première 23 february 2002 - opening weekend Brugge 2002 Cultural Capital of Europe On tour: 2002-2003

Next year this project will be followed by a co-operation between BL!NDMAN and Paul Van Nevel. 8 singers of the Huelgas ensemble will perform polyphonic compositions of the sixteenth century together with BL!NDMAN. Unique in this concept is that the instruments will not accompany the singers, but will perform equal parts. Premiere BL!NDMAN & Huelgas Ensemble: 16 may 2003, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels
